1. Poland loses bid to suspend the EU–Mercosur deal.
The EU’s top court rejected Poland’s attempt to halt implementation of the trade agreement with Mercosur. Warsaw had argued that the deal could damage Polish agriculture and farmers. The ruling means implementation can continue despite Polish objections. This is likely to remain a politically sensitive issue domestically because agriculture has been one of the clearest sources of opposition to the agreement.
2. Poland presses EU for sustained military support to Ukraine.
At the EU defence ministers’ meeting on 28 September, Poland stressed continued military backing for Kyiv, particularly air and missile defence, continued EUMAM training, closer EU–NATO cooperation and a tougher response to Russian hybrid activity. Poland also backed further strengthening of sanctions against Russia. One of the defence projects approved at the meeting was Eastern Flank Watch.
3. Tusk warns against normalising Putin diplomatically.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that inviting Vladimir Putin to December’s G20 summit could be interpreted in Moscow as legitimising aggression rather than encouraging peace. His intervention is worth watching because it illustrates Poland’s continuing argument that negotiations with Moscow must not be separated from deterrence and the military position in Ukraine.
